References and Referees

Once you have marked all sections as finished on the UCAS form, you can send it to the referee. The referee should then go over the entire form and make sure it is correct and accurate. If there are any mistakes, they can send the form back to you, otherwise they can submit the form to UCAS for processing. However you should never rely on this check. When you submit the UCAS form to your referee, you should be confident enough that everything is correct. Mistakes are often missed, and it is a waste of time sending your UCAS form to and from the referee. You are working to a deadline!

Referees for applicants are often head of years and head teachers. You should know who yours is. Once you send the entire application, find your referee as soon as possible. Confirm they have received the application, ask them when they expect to submit the application to UCAS and hold them to it.

For students who are still to take their exams, references should contain your predicted grades. The reference is an ‘open reference’ so every applicant has the right to see what teachers say about. (For more information see the link at the bottom of the page.) Depending on the school/college you may be given a copy, if not just ask for it. UCAS can provide you with a copy, however a fee maybe charged for this. (TBC)

Don’t be afraid to annoy teachers, sometimes, like us students they do require a rocket up their rear to get them moving. Parents and guardians are always a good tool to use against teachers
