Everybody will tell you that you shouldn’t go buying every book on the reading list. MedApp recommends that you always check the books you buy.
Everybody is different and you must find books which suit you. Never go off recommendations from friends, family or reviews etc. Try and get your hands on a copy of the book before buying it. Free copies are available from libraries and friends/relatives already studying medicine. See this post about what to do if you really do get desperate for a copy.
The prices are updated on regular basis but to be sure you get the best deals, always shop around yourself, price comparison sites should help you to get the best possible price. Once you have found the cheapest price, (including any postal charges) go to the individual merchants website. This will ensure that you benefit from any current offers. A list of book selling sites is available here.
Check the forums; often there will be discount codes which may knock some more money off the final sale price.
Last step – post your find in the forum and help other MedApp users or alternatively contact me to have the price list updated.
EBay *– The cheapest available prices are more often than not on eBay. The near perfectly competitive market will ensure you get the best deal. However, obviously there are risks associated with buying on eBay and when you complete the sale you should always bear in mind that if your seller disappears, you will not get your money back. It is however unlikely that sellers would try to con you while buying books on eBay.
What you need to do is to ensure that the book you are buying is the book you want. Books have various editions, including international editions. International sellers particularly will more often than not sell editions which are not suitable for use in the UK.
University bookshops – They do have the advantage of you knowing what you are buying but if you are looking for the most expensive prices, you will find them here. Books in these places are sold at cover prices. Despite their sky-high prices, they will try and entice ‘dopey students’ in with crazy offers like ‘Make ten purchases over £20 and receive £5 off your 11th item.’ If you want a quick bargain, go to the bookshop’s website where you will find the book available at a discounted price.
